Why Indigenous Studies?
McMaster University’s Indigenous Studies program allows students to expand their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, while developing professional skills to work with Indigenous communities.
About First Year
Most students entering the Faculty of Social Sciences in their first year take a general program, Social Sciences I. This allows students to explore various options and experience a wide range of courses. At the end of the first year, students can choose to major in Indigenous Studies.

Required Credential:
Combined Honours in Indigenous Studies and Another Subject (BA)
- Completion of any Level I program, with a Grade Point Average of at least 5.0 and a grade of C in three units of INDIG ST 1A03, INDIG ST 1AA3, or 1B03* (*formerly RECONCIL 1A03). Satisfaction of the admission requirements for the Honours program in the other B.A. subject.
Honours Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies (BA)
- Completion of any Level I program, with a Grade Point Average of at least 5.0 (C) and an average of 5.0 (C) in INDIG ST 1A03, INDIGST 1AA3, or 1B03* (*formerly RECONCIL 1A03).
Bachelor of Arts Indigenous Studies (BA)
- Completion of any Level I program, with a Grade Point Average of at least 3.5 and an average of 4.0 in INDIGST 1A03 and INDIGST 1AA3, or 1B03* (*formerly RECONCIL 1A03)

Academic Advising
The Academic Advising office is run through the Office of the Associate Dean. The primary goal of the Advising Office is to provide all Social Sciences undergraduate students with the information and guidance they need to succeed in their academic careers.
Advisors can help you make the right academic decisions by explaining policies and regulations as well as presenting different options and supports available in your studies.
An academic advisor can assist you with:
- Course requirements, dropping and adding courses
- Program selection, application and changes
- Studying abroad
- Transfer credits
- Petitions for missed term work, deferred examinations and special consideration
